Conformal Coating & RTV Dispensing for PCB Protection

Enhance PCB reliability with moisture, contaminant, and vibration resistance

Maximize PCB longevity & reliability in demanding environments

Why PCB protection matters

Many of the assemblies that ETEMCO produces are ultimately deployed into harsh environments. That’s why we apply conformal coating—adding a protective layer to the printed circuit board to shield it from moisture, chemicals, dust, and temperature extremes, helping it perform to industry standards and maintain its durability over time.

We’re proud to offer RTV dispensing as well if it makes sense for your project.

  • Top-of-the-line equipment

To address the growing need for conformal coating services, we’ve expanded our capabilities by adding a PVA Delta 8 4-axis Conformal Coating and RTV dispensing machine to our factory. The Delta 8 is extremely accurate and efficient, producing a very cost-effective conformal coating solution.

  • Shield against moisture, dust, & chemicals

Factors like moisture and dust wreak havoc on PCBs, potentially leading to corrosion, short circuits, and heat retention that compromise performance and reliability. If your PCB assemblies are at risk from these types of threats, then our coating capabilities offer you a solution to mitigate them.

  • Ensure durability in high-vibration environments

High vibration environments can damage a circuit board assembly, especially those with larger/heavier components such as electrolytic capacitors and transformers. By using our equipment to dispense RTV and secure the components to the board, those risks can be greatly reduced or eliminated.

  • Protect from corrosion & oxidation

Oxidation and corrosion can, over time, quietly degrade performance and undermine the quality of your PCB assemblies, possibly leading to failures. Conformal coatings can protect solder joints and component leads from these hazards.

Conformal coating in PCB assembly

You can rely on us for a streamlined integration of conformal coating into the PCB assembly process so your boards are protected from the start. Our approach minimizes delays, maximizes reliability, and delivers consistent quality.

Zero impact on functionality

The addition of conformal coating won’t hinder PCB functionality in any way. It’s designed to protect without interfering, preserving electrical performance while guarding against moisture, dust, corrosion, and thermal stress.

Available in acrylic, silicone, & urethane

You can choose from a variety of conformal coating materials, including acrylic, epoxy, silicone, and urethane, each offering advantages based on your application’s requirements.

For projects that demand ultra-thin, highly uniform coverage, we also offer parylene conformal coating services.

Selective application across the entire PCB

We provide selective application across the whole printed circuit board so that conformal coating is precisely applied where protection is needed. This also prevents covering components or connectors that require exposure.

RTV dispensing for additional PCB protection

For even more PCB protection, we also offer RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) dispensing, which provides localized reinforcement around larger/heavier components, connectors, or high-stress areas.

Flexible sealing with no impact on PCB functionality

RTV is flexible and doesn’t interfere with the electrical performance or functionality of the board assembly. Unlike more rigid compounds, RTV is flexible, which allows it to absorb vibration and thus remove physical stress from components and the board assembly.

Reduce mechanical stress on components

RTV silicone acts as a flexible cushion that absorbs shocks, vibrations, and thermal expansion, which are three common causes of mechanical stress on electronic components.

Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) for easy integration

RTV fits seamlessly into our existing production flow and doesn’t require specialized handling. Its ability to conform to irregular shapes and hard-to-reach areas makes it ideal for application around selective components.

Common questions about PCB coating & protection

  • When should I use conformal coating versus RTV dispensing?

RTV is typically used to hold something in place, where conformal coating is used to protect the assembly from harsh environments.

  • What types of conformal coatings does ETEMCO offer?

The majority of the assemblies we coat with DOW 3-1953, which is a silicon based conformal coating; however, we can use a variety of coatings a customer would require.

  • How does conformal coating impact PCB performance?

There is no impact to the performance of the assembly.

  • Can conformal coating be applied selectively or must it cover the entire PCB?

With our PVA coating machine, conformal coating and RTV can be applied with high precision in specific locations. The entire PCB does not need to be coated.

  • Do all PCB assemblies require conformal coating or RTV dispensing?

No. RTV typically is used in a high-vibration environment to prevent the solder joints from fracturing. Conformal coating is typically applied to assemblies that will be in a harsh environment during their life. If an assembly is going to be installed in an enclosure and used in an office environment, conformal coating is typically not required.
